To Catarina was conceived of and written in one sleepless January night in 2011. I wanted to create a humorous fanfare which used recent events and people in my life as a jumping point for the musical materials.
Utilizing a few names (which shall not be revealed) to create the pitch material provided me with the daunting task of picking the instrumentation. I wanted something that contrasted the aggressive and bombastic nature of a fanfare. With this in mind, I knew the only instrumental option was a solo flute. The flute is naturally a delicate and beautiful instrument. It was a perfect match.
The materials used are presented in a very sarcastic and humorous manner throughout this little show piece, and should be enjoyed as such.
